Pets and the present moment…

Gifts

Have you noticed how our pets can bring us into the present moment?  How when you run your hand against sleek feline fur and are rewarded by a cat engine purr, the chatter in your head is replaced by the soothing rumbles and you find yourself firmly in the present moment? Our pets know how to be in the present.  All animals do.  Think for a moment about a dog when he is in full belly-rub mode:  his tail thumping in gratitude; the glazed look of pure bliss; and when you stop rubbing, the way his expression changes as if to say, “Seriously, you’re […] Read more »

Taking that first step…

photo credit: blentley via photopin ccWe find our way one step at a time. Stephen Buhner

Does fear stop you from taking that first step?  Fear of looking silly.  Fear of failing.  Fear of not being good enough.  Fear of being too good.  Fear of the unknown. What enables you to take that first step to try something new, take risks, be a different version of yourself; or completely get out of the old and into the new? Is it believing in yourself?  Having someone else believe in you?  Believing in something bigger than yourself? Are there two “voices” having a tug of war inside of you?  One saying, “Don’t do it, play it safe, you might fail, you might […] Read more »

Profound moments…

Hummingbird - Miracles

Have you been in that place when life just seems to flow?  When you feel so settled within yourself; so in tune with yourself; that doors open all around you.  You randomly meet a person, strike up a casual conversation and they say something that is exactly what you needed to hear, right in that moment.  You are deeply questioning something and the answer appears, almost like a gift from the Universe. If you have experienced this (even for a moment) you know how profound it is; how freeing it is. It opens up your heart and allows you to […] Read more »

A mindfulness moment…

Being present takes practice.  Think about it for a moment.  How present are you in the hustle and bustle of your everyday life?  Are you thinking ahead to what you need to do later today?  Thinking ahead to the conversation you need to have?  Distracted by the nagging feeling that you’ve forgotten to do something?  Or are you being pulled into the past: replaying an event over and over again in your head, wishing you would have said something different; handled it differently? We live in a society that rewards multitasking.  The more you can juggle; the more you can take on […] Read more »

My experience with Mantra Yoga

untitled

As I mentioned in the blog post Do you have a personal mantra?, my own journey along this particular path has come in starts and stops.   Although I had begun to formulate a “mantra-of-sorts” for myself, it was during a 10-day yoga retreat that mantras took on a whole different level of meaning for me.  And no, my initial response to mantras was not positive. I remember the day we started to explore Mantra Yoga and the subsequent days when we used mantras.   Chanting in a group felt powerful but I kept finding myself getting tripped up on “but what do these words […] Read more »

What trips you up?

Being Still

If you haven’t already, take a moment to watch the video in the right sidebar (or via YouTube) called Being Truly Present.  Then stop for another moment and check-in with yourself.  What trips you up?  Do you find yourself: Looking outside, rather than within? Having difficulty finding the quiet: to hear the voice within? Being so focused on the end result — what you want to achieve; where you want to go — that you’re disconnected and missing what is right in front of you? Falling into the fear trap: the needing to control?  Wanting to know where the path goes, before taking the first step? If […] Read more »

Being in the left, right…both?

Right Brain - Left Brain Phtot from Photo Pin

This isn’t a post about whether it is “better” to be right-brained or left-brained.  Or whether one is “left-brain dominant” or “right-brain dominant” (or if that even exists).  No, it’s about how to harness both sides of your brain.  How to move from one side to the other.  If you’re “stuck” in the left…how to move yourself into the right.  And most fun of all, it will include an empowering podcast visualization exercise at the end. If you’re a writer, you’ll know what it’s like to feel stuck and disconnected from the more creative, free-flowing side of yourself.  If you’re not a writer…you […] Read more »

Do you have a personal mantra?

Pencil sketch by author of Beingtrulypresent.com

Mantras, universal mantras, personal mantras: what exactly are they?  How do you find one that has meaning to you?  The answers to these questions vary depending on whether you are coming from a traditional point of view or a more “Western” one. “The word mantra has two parts: man, which is the root of the Sanskrit word for mind; and tra, which is the root of the word instrument. A mantra is therefore an instrument of the mind, a powerful sound or vibration that you can use to enter a deep state of meditation.”  More at  The Chopra Centre. “Universal mantras are […] Read more »

Blogger’s Creed…

Blogger's Creed

The decision to start this blog came with both ease and difficulty.  The ease?  Knowing deep within myself that it is the right time and the right place.  Knowing that writing is a part of me, is a part of my journey and that what I write is meant to be shared.  The difficulty?  The moments when I lose touch with that deep sense of knowing and hear my inner critic instead, saying “What are you doing!?!  What do you have to offer that hasn’t already been written?  What do you know about self-hosting, plug-ins, widgets, SEO, html coding, responsive […] Read more »
